CNN: Ask for a raise in 2011
I was rather surprised and even a little shocked when I read this headline; who would even dare to ask for a raise when everyone, including the employers, is trying to pinch every penny possible?
Scouring through the article, I have to say they came up with good reasoning and even gave a plan of attack:
ACTION PLAN 1: Angle for that promotion.
Keep in mind you will have to get the bait first before casting your line. I suppose, the early bird catches the worm!
ACTION PLAN 2: Toot your own horn.
True enough, because hardly anyone else will. Just don't toot it too loud or people will not hear you: they will cover their ears!
ACTION PLAN 3: Raise your visibility in-house.
That reminds me of the commercial where the guy is late, but brings breakfast. Yup, you will have to work yourself in the picture!
ACTION PLAN 4: Nurture your network.
This does not seem such a good idea to me; using the Internet as bait to toot your own horn will definitely raise your in-house visibility. It will indicate you are spending way too much valuable time on personal matters, instead of your job. We all know what that could lead to:
It could get you fired!
