CNN: Free Cone Day a tradition since 1979

This post brought to you by The Walmart Foundation. All opinions are 100% mine.

Getting a free cone would be a real treat for all those 50 million Americans who aren't able to feed either themselves, or their families. Yes, you read that right; the number of people fighting hunger on a daily basis is that high and is mainly due to unemployment.

It gets even worse during spring, because of a decrease in food and charitable donations to the food banks. To bring relief to all those starving families, the Vote to fight spring hunger with Walmart, in association with Feeding America, ConAgra, General Mills, Kraft, and Kellogg's, will be held from Monday, April 9 through April 30, 2012.

Your help is needed and all you have to do is join the Facebook campaign during that period and vote for one of the 200 communities with the highest unemployment rate as determined by this Department of Labor Report. The community with the most votes will be revealed on May 1st and receives a $1 million donation from Walmart and the 20 runners-up will each be given $50,000. I would start close to home and my vote would go to Birmingham-Hoover, Alabama.

Another way to donate a meal to Feeding America or Action for Healthy Kids, a nonprofit fighting childhood hunger, is paying attention to the signs in the Walmart stores and purchasing the specifically for this purpose packaged products from ConAgra, General Mills, Kraft and Kellogg's.

Make a difference; vote on Facebook, buy the products and spread the word during April 9th and April 30th. A family in need will highly appreciate and be grateful for your help!
