CNN: Big spike in traffic fatalities

This shouldn't come as a surprise, because the media has and still is making mention of accidents due to distractions. Most of those distractions are the result of texting or being on the phone, making or answering supposedly important calls that couldn't wait.

It is incredible seeing how many of our fellow road-users are on the phone while driving. The other day, it became quite obvious on our way home; at least half of the people we encountered or were in front of us had a phone attached to their ear.

One of them didn't even notice that the traffic light had already turned green about ten seconds ago. Another one was going way beyond the speed limit, but apparently involved in a very lively conversation, which could be gathered from all the hand and head gestures.

There are several other situations which take the focus away from the road and there is no doubt in my mind that we all have done one or some of those listed in the IFA Auto Insurance infographic below. We would do wisely to focus on the road and our driving skills.

It could and would make a difference between life and death!
